How to attach a half wig?

Updated: Jul 14, 2023

Half wigs are a quick and easy way to add volume to your hairstyle. The special part about these wigs is that they only go on the back of your head while you style your natural hair in the front. After putting prepping your hair and putting on the wig, you’ll have a variety of ways to style both your natural hair and wig to create a stylish, cohesive look! Within a matter of minutes, you’ll be ready to go out and about with your newest hairstyle.

Tie your hair into a ponytail before putting on the wig. Use both hands to take the back sections of your hair and secure them into a high ponytail. Keep in mind that the half wig will still be featuring your natural hair along the front of your head, so the ponytail will be covered on the back. If you have shorter hair, aim for the ponytail to be centred along the back of your head

-If you’d prefer for your hair to be more secure, tug a wig cap over the back portions of your hair. When wearing a cap, try tying your hair in a bun instead of a ponytail. If you see any stray hairs, be sure to secure them with bobby pins.

Braid your hair back in rows if your hair is coarse. Separate the front sections of your hair by braiding them horizontally along your forehead. Once these braids are in place, use the edge of a flat comb to continue separating the rest of your hair into 1 inch (2.5 cm) sections. Braid each of these sections backwards, until they reach your lower hairline along the neck.

-Use hair clips to fold up the lower sections of your braids. This makes it easier to conceal your hair beneath the half wig.

Style the front sections of your hair. Go through your bangs with a comb, bringing forward all of the

natural hair that you plan to style with the wig. Make sure that this section of hair is pushed in front of your ears, or else it might get caught in the wig later. Continue combing until there’s a clear part between your natural hair and the edge of the wig cap.

-The wig cap should go across the top of your head, instead of reaching your forehead.

attaching and securing the wig

Fasten the wig clips along the edge of your wig cap. Take the wig and place it over the back of your head. If your wig has an especially large clip, use this to initially attach the wig to the edge of your cap. Make sure that the half wig is secured all around the cap, including the sides and bottom

-Many half wigs come with clips that help you secure it into place.

Take the bottommost wig clip and tuck it beneath your lower hairline. Check around the bottom section of the half wig for another comb. In addition to the comb on top, use the device attached to the lower part of the wig to stick the teeth into the lower hairline along the edge of your neck.

-This clip isn’t required to hold your half wig in place, but it can be useful to individuals with longer hair.

-If you want to provide extra security to your half wig, try weaving it into place.

Take the half wig off by gently removing the clips. Use soft, gentle motions to tug the lower comb from your hair, if necessary. Next, delicately tug the larger, upper clip from your natural hair. Make sure that you’ve removed any bobby pins or clips before you proceed with taking off the half wig

-When removing a sewn-on wig, carefully feel around the circumference of your head for the threads keeping your wig in place. Use a small pair of scissors to cut through these stitches and loosen the wig.

creating different looks

Pull up the front sections of your natural hair with a comb. Take the thin, narrow end of a rat-tail comb and slide it beneath the front portions of natural hair that are visible in front of your half wig. Instead of pulling the hair out completely, use the end of the comb to make the surface of natural hair puff slightly

-Are you worried that your natural hair still won’t look like it’s blending with the wig? Don’t worry—take some small, 1 inch (2.5 cm) sections of hair from the back of your half wig and tousle them to the front to balance out the look.

Twist the top section of your half wig into a bun. Use both hands to grab the top layer of hair along your half wig. Take this section of hair and twist it in a circular motion to form a bun. If you’d prefer to make your bun more exact, you can also style it with a sock

-Tie on a bandana or headband in front of the bun for a stylish look.

Tie 2 small buns on the top of your head if you’d rather go for a cute look. Take a small portion of both natural and synthetic hair on the right side of your head and tie it in a pigtail. Create an identical pigtail with the natural and synthetic hair on your left side. Once these base pigtails are in place, take each section of hair and twist it in a circular motion, forming a bun. Use 2 hair ties to secure both of these buns into place.

-Use bobby pins to provide extra security for your hair while tying the buns.

Braid your natural hair down the side of your wig for a chic vibe. Take the front section of your natural hair and braid it normally. Continue the braid down your hairline, and tuck it into place behind your ear with a bobby pin. If you want to keep your hair out of your face, tie the rest of your wig into a side ponytail after you secure the bobby pins into place

-If you’d like, you can also test out another style of braid, like a French braid.

-Create a fun spin on this look by tying the majority of your wig hair into a fun updo!
